COREOGRAFIAS TAKES THE SPOTLIGHT
Tradition provides a stage for competition, learning opportunities
March 23, 2023
It’s the event of the year. And it’s finally here.
It’s Coreografias. And at Colegio Menor, this annual event brings out the best — and sometimes the most challenging – opportunities for collaboration, celebration, and learning.
“For the entire community, this is something — which, if done correctly — should bring everyone together,” said Mane Vasconez, a science teacher and faculty advisor of Coreografias. “(Coreografias) kind of forces you on another level to talk to each other, to come to agreements, to develop a script together.”
Performances organized by each high school grade level will include complex storylines, superior stage props and plenty of dancing, all set to this year’s theme: Mythologies.
In the end, four judges will decide which grade takes home the top prize for creating the greatest stage production of the night. And while this year’s senior’s walked away with last year’s title, there’s three other grade levels vying to make their mark in 2023.
The fun all begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 24, on the covered courts at Colegio Menor.
Seniors Prepared for “End of an Era”
Grade 12 looks to defend Coreografias title
Coreografias is not just any event. It’s a magical time when an entire group of 120 people work together to create one of the biggest shows ever seen.
On Friday, March 24, the senior class at Colegio Menor will take their last steps on the Coreografias stage. It’s time for these 120 students go out into the world to find their own destinies and fulfill their dreams; but before they separate, they will have one last dance.
The feeling of the seniors towards this Coreografias is weird since everyone is excited for this incredible event, but also sad knowing its their last.
“I feel very emotional, ” said Barbara Cevallos, a Grade 12 ClassCo. “We’ve only had three years of Coreografias, because we lost one to the pandemic. I think my grade has a lot of emotion for this time of the year.”
“I feel sad, but also very excited,” said Ignacio Diaz, a senior. “I know my role, I know everyone knows their role and is going to a great part and we are going to win.”
This year the seniors were assigned the theme of “Greek Mythology” and have characters like Zeus, Hades and Poseidon as characters in their production. The seniors story is called, “The End of an Era,” symbolizing what will happen in their story, but also a reference to themselves and that this will be the last time the 2023 promotion will be part of Coreografias.
The seniors arrive to this Coreografias as current champions since last year they won, which creates expectations and also puts even more pressure on the class to perform.
Everyone expects something never seen before from the seniors and the word on the street is that this year’s production won’t disappoint.
The seniors are set to deliver one of the best Coreografias performances in history, so be ready to watch “The End of an Era.”
Bringing the Energy of Egypt
Grade 11 students gearing up for a redemption tour in ’23
Coreografías is right around the corner and with so much excitement roaming the hallways of Menor, here’s a sneak peak into what the 11th graders are up to.
“Coreografías is an event that brings each students passions and brings them together,” said Alegría Davíla, StuGov vice president and a junior (Grade 11).
Coreografías is a high school event in which everyone has a chance to participate. Each year a different theme is chosen and all students can bring their passion and talents to the table to create a show stopping presentation.
This year’s theme for the event is mythologies. For Grade 11, that means exploring the ideals of Egyptian mythology.
For the presentation, the dancing groups will be fully costumed as different Egyptian gods, like Ra.
The prop group has worked hard during the last couple of weeks to create the elements essential to the story with help from material provided by the rest of the grade.
The Telones team was in charge of creating the backdrop, which includes a reference to ancient Egypt with a touch of modern elements in it.
Finally, the backstage group is everything from behind the curtains from moving stuff around to helping everyone find their way in and out. All of the groups are putting all their efforts in to make the final show the best presentation ever.
“Coreografias is an event that requires a lot of hard work, teamwork and collaboration so I think people should see how big of an event it is as well as the hard work that goes behind it,” said Martin Revelo, a ClassCo for Grade 11.
With a lot of hard work and several rehearsals, the students mentioned they are ready to rock the show.
The juniors should hit the stage some time around 9 p.m. on Friday, March 24.
Sophomores Ready for Round Two
Grade 10 students to tackle Norse Mythology at Coreografias
With the 2023 production of Coreografias just hours away, 10th graders are approaching their
second experience of participating in this great event.
Throughout the preparation process for Coreografias, 10th graders have been putting a lot of effort on props, telones, scripts, mixes and — obviously — dances.
In terms of experience, the 10th grader have only one year of participation in Coreografias, last year when
they finished third overall. But the experience from 2022 led this group to gaining a lot of knowledge about the event and learning how to improve for this year’s showing.
“I do think (we) have struggled,” said ClassCo Emilia Anker, a 10th grader. “And since it is just our second year, we are still improving.”
“The most challenging aspect is definitely organizing everything with the script, telones and props,” added classmate Camilo Rosales.
Everyone gets an opportunity to take part in Coreografias, which is a high school activity held each spring. Every year, a new theme is picked, and all students are encouraged to contribute their passions and skills to make a presentation that will blow the audience away.
This year’s theme for Coreografias is mythologies. The 10th grade has chosen to focus deeply on
Norse Mythology. The trick will be having all elements and details related to this theme organized in a way so that they can compete at a high level against other grades.
Rosales added that one unique aspect of Grade 10’s production is the desire to share the story which conveys that “there is not always an end for things and there is a cycle in life.”
After winning the Balcones competition earlier this school year, the expectations for 10th grade are high. Their production should begin around 7:30 p.m. on the covered courts.
The New Kids on the Block
Freshmen prepare for their first Coreografias experience
Coregrafias is right around the corner and Grade 9 students have done a fantastic job for this being their first year participating in this prestigious Colegio Menor event.
For this year’s event, Grade 9 will be presenting on the theme of Incan mythology. And while they are getting close to being ready for their final performance on Friday, the work leading up to this point in the process hasn’t come without sacrifice.
“The most challenging part has been spending a lot of time in practices and leaving sports and other side hobbies aside,” said Isabella Dominguez, a freshman leader. “It has been very complicated to manage times outside of what is not Coreografias.”
The freshman have survived a really hard process during these past three/four weeks of choreographies preparation, completing their Telon, script, mixes and dances in time.
And even despite being new to the production, Grade 9 is confident in their ability to make an impact in their first experience.
“It’s our first year, but since the beginning of the year, we have joined together,” said Emilio Franco, a Grade 9 ClassCo. “I’m really surprised with how much effort everyone has put into (Coreografias).”
To be dedicated this much towards the event, the freshmen are looking forward to exceeding the expectation that they will end up at the bottom of the podium.
Nothing more and nothing less, the event is created to make the grades come together and hopefully we can see an amazing performance from the freshmen that are for sure going to give their best performance on stage.
Grade 9 is coming in strong and with their minds set to achieve only one goal.
