Themes Announced for Balcones and Coreografias
Balcones scheduled for Dec. 2, Coreographias on March 31
This year’s Coreografias and Balcones themes were announced on Friday, October 21, in the Rotonda after a spectacular “Bloque G” presentation and a week full of crazy outfits and incredible food.
Balcones is a high school competition where each grade makes a balcony or setting representing Quito’s culture. This year’s Balcones theme is: “Unknown Quito Legends.”
Coreografias is the biggest competition between classes in the year. Grades make scripts, dances, videos, and props based on their own theme. The theme for this year’s Coreografias will be: “Mythologies”
For this year’s Coreographias competition, each grade will choose a different mythology from around the world. The most commonly used mythologies for the competition are: Chinese, Indian, Nordic, Greek, Egyptian, and Aztec mythologies.
The sub-themes corresponding to each grade will be chosen at the end of November. Mane Vasconez, the Student Government advisor is in full support of this year’s theme being one that generates a lot of interest from students.
“The Coreografias theme is well thought out and has many sub-topics that generate great ideas for students,” Vasconez said.
Last year, the current seniors ended up being crowned the champions of Coreografias. The seniors are close to making history and possibly becoming the third class in the history of Coreografias to win multiple times throughout their high school careers.
The class of 2019 won the unbelievable competition three times in a row.
The current 10th graders finished in 3rd place last year, which is a really good position considering it was their first year in the competition. The juniors finished in fourth place and this year will try to turn things around.
This year looks like an exciting and challenging competition as each grade will use all their effort to take the long-awaited trophy.
The Balcones competition will take place on December 2, 2022, and will challenge the classes to decorate their very own balcony, which must stand on its own in the coliseum and commemorate the specific legend that they have been assigned.
The legends chosen for this year include 9th grade — La Iglesia del Robo; 10th grade — La Olla del Panecillo; 11th grade — La Capa del Estudiante; 12th grade — El Santo que da Marido.
Joaquin Lalama, the student government president, is super excited about this massive event.
“I know each grade will give the best performance they can and I hope everyone has fun making their balconies and scripts,” Lalama said.
Last year, the current seniors won first place with their incredible balcony and Panecillo. Second place belonged to the current 10th graders, while this year’s 11th grade class came in fourth.
The 9th grade class of 2022-2023 is gearing up for their first Balcones experience.
This year’s prize is still to be determined but is usually two paint gallons or $100 to use in Coreografias.
Both themes give hope that this year will be a magnificent one for the upcoming events. It will be two exciting events where the competition should be close between all grades.
The seniors may be the favorites to win on paper, due to their past experience, but anyone could end up winning either of these incredible events. Nobody should be underestimated and it looks to be like one of the best Coreografias and Balcones the school has ever had.
