Strong start to season for Bears boys
Menor goes 3-1 to begin a new campaign
Things are looking promising for the boy’s varsity football team this year.
“We have a good team, we play organized, and we are good in every role on the pitch,” said Ignacio Diaz, a senior right-back for the Bears.
This year’s Colegio Menor team has four returning players from last year’s squad. With all the new faces on this year’s team, one goal that they have been working towards is improving their team chemistry on and off the pitch.
“We are a nice group,” added Diaz. “We are all friends off the pitch, which helps with the chemistry on the pitch.”
The captains of this year’s team are juniors Camilo Rivas and Jose Manuel Eguiguren. They will be getting plenty of help from senior Juan Javier Donoso, a mid-fielder, and his classmate Vladimiro Platonoff, a goalie.
The goals of the team this year are very clear and they are to play a well-constructed football and win every match they play.
For now, the team has only played four games since the start of the academic year.
They started the season off hot with a 3-0 win over Colegio Terranova during Family Day, on Saturday, Oct. 21. They followed up that win with another 3-0 victory, this time over Mariscalinos in the first round of group play in the SuperLiga Estudiantil Tournament.
The Bears picked up another win in their second group game of the Estudiantil when they took down Les Blues, 3-1. After a sluggish start, Rivas put the ball in the back of the net on a dandy of a free-kick, which sparked his team’s comeback.
Menor recorded their first loss of the season — and the Estudiantil Tournament — on Saturday, Nov. 20, as they fell to Duendes Eugenio Espejo, 1-0.
Despite the setbacks, the Bears hot start to the season has please many of the players and fans alike.
“I watched the first two games of the football season for Menor, and I was impressed with the team performance,” said Bears fan Emilio Vega. “I haven’t seen them play this good in a lot of years.”
The Menor boys futbol team will get a chance to rebound from their latest game on Friday, Nov. 25, when they play Americano at 4 p.m. in their next match of the Estudiantil Tournament. All games for the tournament are scheduled to take place at Ruta Futbol.
